It is said that no country has a wider selection of exotic sweets than India. To the western world the variety of Indian sweets comes as a sheer surprise. Can you debate it? It is amazing to the world how Indians use milk, flour, sugar, jaggery as primary ingredients to make such a wide variety of sweet delectables. No other country on earth can match India in just the variety of sweets that we have, leave alone the sensory impression they bring to the taste buds. In every sense, Indian mithai are a “sweet gift” to the world. For this very same reason Indian sweets are sought after in other countries of the world as well.
In most Indian restaurants outside India, the menu does not do justice to the enormous variety of Indian cuisine or Indian sweets. There are restaurants that serve cuisines from regions of India, although these are few and far between. Historically, Indian spices and herbs were one of the most sought after trade commodities. So was sugar. During the years 1625 to 1750, sugar was worth its weight in gold and was referred to as “White Gold”. For the past thousands of years sugarcane is being cultivated in India. However sugarcane became popular and spread to the rest of the world only after Indians developed the technique of turning sugarcane juice into granulated crystals there by making it easy to store as well as transport. Today, India also exports sweets and savories to various countries like UAE and Australia. Indians residing abroad and foreigners who are fascinated by Indian sweets don’t have to worry if they do not have Indian sweet shops or restaurants serving Indian mithai. All they need to do is go online and order their favorite mithai from their homes and indulge into the sweetness and creaminess of the adulteration free or milavat free mithai . They can also send sweet gifts to mark special occasions, weddings or Indian festivals like Holi and Diwali. For us the “sweet- toothed” Indians residing in India, the “mithaiwala” has now come online. Yes there are sweet shopping sites in India! Go! Give in to those sweet temptations and dig into those soft spongy rasgullas dipped into the chilled sugary syrup or the sweet Rasmalai soaked in thickened milk and served with slivers of pistachio nuts. You can order your favorite sweets and other savory items online or send sweet gifts to your loved ones too. It’s a great way to serve your “mithais” on the table without heading into that sweet shop in the crowded bazaar.

Any occasion, be it big or small is incomplete without a sweet dish. Almost every Indian celebration has a mandatory spread of sweet delicacies. The celebration of every festival is incomplete without relishing the mouth-watering sweets made for that occasion. Traditional sweets will always be associated with marriage and other important ceremonies, with special sweets that match with specific festivals and occasions. Can one think of a shagun occasion without laddoos? Handmade and carefully crafted, the list of Indian desserts is very extensive.
